Ski mountaineering is the art of travelling up and down mountains using alpine touring (AT), telemark or split-board equipment. A very good fitness level, avalanche rescue gear and expertise in avoiding avalanches are all essential skills of the ski mountaineer. Boot or ski crampons and ice axe skills may be necessary for the climbs and rope work including rappelling for parts of the descents.
