10/03/07 Trailridge Road Reopened

Trailridge road (HWY 34) reopened on Wednesday the 3rd of October after new snow covered the road this week.

October 3rd, 2007

Trailridge Road (HWY 34) which crosses from the east side of the Continental Divide just south of the Fall RIver Canyon to the west side at Grand Lake, is typically closed from mid-October until mid-May each year when winter snows block this highest passage across the Rockies Mountain Range.  This east-west highway is often closed seasonally when new snow or ice makes this vertigous two-lane road too hazardous for auto traffic.

The storm systems that raked the Continental Divide on 9/29 and 10/2 left behind drifts up to a meter in height along Trailridge Road and with over a foot of fresh deposited in the Ptarmagin and Tyndall Gorges and along the flanks of Taylor Peak, it is very quickly looking like winter up high.

An NPS spokesperson said that Trailridge road would be closed again when new snowfall makes it too difficult to plow or dangerous for driving.  The winter storm forecast for this weekend (10/6) could easily shut-down this popular tourist access road that connects the east and west sides of Rocky Mountain National Park.
