The body of Broomfield, CO resident Lacy Meadows was found near the southern boundary of Rocky Mountain National Park on July 25th and recovered today by RMNP search crews who were notified of the 40 yr. olds failure to return from his ski trip on Saturday, July 24th.
Lacy was a year-round backcountry skier, and he apparently made this ski trip without companions into the Hutcheson Lakes area of RMNP. When he did not return on Saturday night, his friends contacted RMNP Rangers who initiated a search on Sunday morning.
Rangers and search team members found Lacy dead above Coney Lake on the snowslopes where he likely fell to his death. Lacy was a very experienced backcountry skier who leaves behind family and many friends who described him as "an avid and passionate skier, both inbounds and in the backcountry."
"He had unending energy that resonated with each and every person he met," a friend Brittany Walker said. He was "An honest soul and a great friend. Lacy lived and loved every day of his life to the fullest."
Walker said that Meadows, who worked as a manager in the construction industry, skied almost every weekend of the entire year. His family, including a twin brother, apparently live in West Virginia
The Boulder County Coroner's Office is investigating the cause of death, which would likely be trauma due to an unarrested slip on snow on either the ascent or descent.
A skier, Matt Chesaux, also died in a slip while skiing in RMNP last September. Read the details of his accident here.
