Brad Bond leading the way on the Broadway traverse on May 30th, 2008.
The Broadway ledge system on the east face of Longs Peak can be a casual stroll in the summer months. However, in "winter-type" conditions such as what we found on this late May day, the traverse of this "ledge" can be the crux of any of the classic routes found to the south of the Diamond. Considered a "sharp at both ends" traverse, both the leader and follower are looking at a pendulum type fall which would likely result in a slide over the lip of the lower east face (800') of Longs. With steep snow up to 65 degrees in angle and difficult footing, solid pro (mostly small to med. cams) and very good footwork are required to avoid what would surely be a shorts-soiling whipper. Brad and his partners skied down the Notch Couloir and back across Broadway on this stellar day in the high mountains.
