Simon Fryer skinning up the "Dead Elk Couloir" on Flattop Mountain - Jan. 24th, 2008

Image

Chris Donharl and Simon carving out an uphill track in the "Dead Elk Couloir":  the left-most of the Dragontail Couloirs that sit on the south aspect of Flattop Mountain in Rocky Mountain National Park.  This striking feature starts in the low 30 degree angle range and reaches a peak angle of 36 degrees in it's middle section.  Our posse found excellent powder conditions and very good stability on these slopes on this absolutely perfect day in late January.  And yes there is still a dead elk carcas in the upper reaches of this snowy gash.
