The usually snow-free west face of Longs Peak shines in the late December sun.
The west face of Longs Peak is a broad sweep of granite that defines the eastern edge of the Glacier Gorge, one of the most scenic valleys in Rocky Mountain National Park.
In mid-winter when avalanche danger is typically CONSIDERABLE or higher on the eastern flanks of the park's highest peak, the west face offers the most direct and safest access to this northern-most 14er in the state of Colorado.
The Trough Couloir which takes a plum line down from just below the summit to the valley bottom, can offer great cramponing or skiing conditions for much of the winter and this is an excellent training route for other bigger peaks around the world.
